In every story, there must be something at stake. This is especially true for thrillers and suspense novels, but it actually applies to all in some way. For example, in the Romance genre, love is the ultimate goal and the story’s conflict often lies in either competition for the same lover or some problem such as potential scandal that threatens to destroy the love or otherwise prevent the relationship.
And upping the stakes throughout the plot increases the emotional power of the tale. The danger escalates or the obstacles multiply. Thus, the final climax is the more spectacular and satisfying.
